Reframing the Every Day
Shifting Focus
This past summer I made an effort to view every moment outside as a mini adventure. We have a tendency to get caught up in our routines and miss the small moments in our everyday. I started viewing my daily runs as mini adventures throughout the city. Thinking of my daily routine in this way made me more present, noticing things I hadn’t before, and appreciating the spaces I’ve taken for granted in a new light.
We get so focused on adventures needing to be some big trip, but that’s not true. Whether you’re taking the kids to school, going on your morning walk to get coffee, or running errands, you can turn these moments into adventure. They’ve become part of your routine for a reason but I feel that often we approach routine as a chore or something that has to get done. What if we reframe it?
Routine Rebrand
Would you have any idea that just over the bridge in the picture above was one of the busiest cities if I hadn’t told you? I took this photo coming back to the city after a Saturday long run on Randall’s Island. I hadn’t been to Randall’s Island in almost nine years but it’s the perfect example of a micro adventure.
What if we reframed our routine to make it more exciting? Can you take a different route to work? Boom, adventure. It might sound silly, but thinking about the little things from this perspective makes them less customary and more enjoyable.

Brilliant piece on reframing routines as little adventures. The way seeing your daily run through that lens shifted how present you were is somehting I've noticed too when I started treating my commute like exploration instead of drudge work. It's kinda wild how just tweaking the mental frame can pull out details and beauty we'd otherwise miss. Makes me wanna try taking a totally newroute tomorrow.
